The story goes that in the early 18th century, the King of France, consumed by his fondness of Tennis, sought out to play the best players in his land. Troublesomely, the King was not a good Tennis player and would often lose by a wide margin; 0-6 the most common score.

It is rude to give a King a 0. He may decide that one’s head is no longer appropriately placed atop one’s neck. A clever courtier devised a solution. Instead of giving the King a problematic 0, the winning player would instead present the King with a jewel encrusted egg. The French would for egg is oeuf. “The Egg” is l’oeuf, L’Oeuf became Love.
